Historical Background
 

Karabük University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Social Work Department was established on February 2, 2011, and has been providing social work education at the undergraduate level since 2013 and the at graduate level since 2018. Since the 2022-2023 academic year, our department has been providing social work education at the doctoral level. With this aspect, our department has the distinction of being the only department that provides doctoral education in the Black Sea Region. In addition our department, which has the highest number of international students among other social work departments in Turkey, has student and academic staff mobility agreements with three different universities from Europe under the ERASMUS Programme. In addition to all these, the 24th social work symposium, which is organized every year in cooperation with the Turkish Association of Social Workers and a social work department, was held in our department with international participation.
The academic staff of our department consists of two professors, three associate professors, an assistant professor, and three research assistants as of the 2022-2023 academic year. Apart from the faculty members of our department, academicians from different departments of our university and social workers working in the field contribute to the education processes of our students.


Global Definition of Social Work

According to IFSW (International Federation of Social Workers) and  The International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW):

“Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversities are central to social work. Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and indigenous knowledge, social work engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance wellbeing”.
